Santa Claus’ family tree.

St. Nicholas was a Christian bishop and saint from Myra, now Turkey. He lived between 270 or 286 and 326 or 351. He was born into a rich family, but he distributed all his wealth among the poor. According to popular belief, he descends from heaven. He comes to the children on foot or in a sleigh pulled by horses. He is dressed as a bishop and is accompanied by angels and demons. He gives presents to the children on the evening of December 5th or in the morning of December 6th.

The Christ Child (Christkind) was created during the time of the Reformation. Martin Luther and the Protestants rejected the veneration of saints. They also rejected St. Nicholas. Instead of St. Nicholas, the Christ Child was introduced as the gift-giving figure. The Christ Child does not bring the presents at the beginning of December, but on Christmas Eve or in the morning on Christmas Day. The Christ Child tradition has spread throughout Central, Eastern, Southern Europe and even to southern Brazil.

The Christ Child is depicted as a blond child with angel wings and a halo.

Father Frost is of Slavic origin. He developed over the centuries from the Slavic spirit of Morozko. The belief was widespread in Eastern Europe and Russia. Eastern European migrants brought the belief to America. In the rest of Europe, the belief spread under communism, also for political reasons.

Father Frost wears a long white beard and a long fur coat with blue motifs. In his hand he holds a scepter with which he can freeze anything. He lives deep in the taiga. He drives a sleigh pulled by reindeer or iron horses. Today Father Frost is sometimes depicted in a red fur coat.

Father Frost brings gifts on New Year’s Eve or in the morning on New Year’s Day.

Santa Claus was created in the 19th century through the fusion of various customs:

1 Saint Nicholas

The Dutch emigrants brought the tradition of Sinterklaas (St. Nicholas) to America. The English name Sainta Claus then developed from this name.

2 Father Frost

The Eastern European emigrants brought the tradition of Father Frost to America. Many elements of Father Frost were then adopted: old grandfather, long white beard, the coat, the sleigh, the reindeer, the snow and the cold.

3 Christ Child

The Protestants brought the Christ Child to America and the following elements were adopted: the time of the gift giving, the type of arrival or flying, the time of the arrival when the children are asleep.

All elements were not adopted at once. It is also unclear when exactly they were adopted. Santa Claus originated among migrants and therefore there were no records for a very long time. The first fairy tale about Santa Claus was published (anonymously) in 1823. However, it must be emphasized that by this time beliefs and customs were already widespread.

Santa Claus was initially only known through stories. In the 19th century, Santa Claus also began to be drawn. There were various interpretations, and this is reflected in the drawings. In 1837, Robert Walter Weir depicted Santa Claus as an elf, and this corresponds to the Dutch version of Sinterklaas. Others depicted Santa Claus as an old man, and this corresponds more to the Eastern European idea of Father Frost.

There was also no uniform opinion on clothing and Santa Claus wore clothes in different colors. The picture from 1821 shows Santa Claus in peasant yellow clothing. The picture from 1823 shows Santa Claus in green clothes with a top hat.

In the middle of the 19th century, Santa Claus was often depicted in bishop’s clothing, like St. Nicholas.

In the second half of the 19th century, Santa Claus was depicted in dark or even black clothes and without a beard.

In 1881, Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker depicted Santa Claus in red clothes. He was carrying a pile of toys and smoking a pipe. The two authors thus laid the foundation for today’s Santa Claus.

Today, many people believe that Santa Claus was invented by Coca-Cola. However, that is not true. Coca-Cola began advertising with Santa Claus in 1931 and the company continues to do so today. No wonder that many people today associate Santa Claus with Coca-Cola.

Santa Claus lives on the North Pole. He brings presents on Christmas Eve or early on Christmas Day. He comes in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, the first in the team being Rudolf. The reindeer can gallop through the air and so Santa flies over. He gets into the house through the chimney.
