Riding Center Janhar Farm

A Brief History

Janhar Farm is one of the oldest farms in Hraše. It was already mentioned in the Franciscan Cadastre in 1827 under the house name Šternovi. The farm received this name because it had the deepest well in the village, the so-called “šterna.”

During the First World War, the farm was left without male labor, so the nephew France came from Brezje to help. At that time, horses were already kept on the farm as working animals. France started a family with his neighbor Mici. When a tractor was purchased, the horse Pubi was given to the neighbors, while Jože, the son of France and Mici, received a foal named Sokol for his confirmation. He paid half of the purchase price from his own savings. Later, father France bought a mare again so he could drive a light carriage.

You can read more about the rich history of Janhar Farm in the book V ritmu Lipicancev, in which Dr. Rajmund Lampreht presents the history of the farm across 16 pages.

Introduction to the Lipizzaner

A special feature of the farm is the Lipizzaner horse. The Lipizzaner breed was founded in 1580 on the Slovenian Karst plateau – in Lipica – at what was then the imperial stud farm of the Habsburg Monarchy.

Karst horses were highly valued even before the establishment of the stud farm. They were durable and particularly suitable for carriage driving and long-distance riding. For systematic breeding, Archduke Charles purchased not only Karst mares but also mares and stallions from Spain and the Po Valley. Spanish (Andalusian), Italian (Neapolitan), and Arabian horses were used for crossbreeding, and from 1717 onward also horses from Germany and Denmark.

To this day, six classical stallion lines have been preserved at the Lipica Stud Farm: Conversano, Neapolitano, Favory, Maestoso, Pluto, and Siglavy.
